Shocking photos of the Caribbean Sea!

You won’t believe it – more than 5.25 BILLION pieces of plastic waste are in the seas and oceans around the world! Environmentalists say that by 2050 the number of plastic trash will overtake the number of fish found in reservoirs. Despite such shocking data, these photographs – are even more shocking!

The impressive photos were taken in October 2017 between the islands of Roatan and Cayos Cochinos (off the coast of Honduras) by photographer Caroline Power. These horrific waste surfaces in the Caribbean have been an ongoing problem for years.

“Unfortunately, this is an increasingly common phenomenon. I have lived on the island of Roatan in Honduras for 11 years, but the waves of garbage have been increasing over the past few,” – Power said in an interview with IFLScience.

The solution seems to be simple. First and foremost, huge changes need to be made in the way we handle waste. Recycling and Reusing objects seem to be the most obvious steps. However, experts stress that it is much more important to reduce and limit the use of plastics, for example, by creating reusable plastics.

“Even if only 1% of the people who see these photographs rethink their handling of waste, it’s a huge step forward,” believes the author of the photos, “The pollution captured in the frames is only a small part of the ocean, and similar images take place off every coast on Earth. Every person from every country is partly responsible for the global crisis resulting from the littering of our planet.”
